Cab drivers are independent contractors, not employees. This concept applies not only to our business relationship with each driver but the attitude and competency level necessary to be a successful cab driver. If you are a dedicated professional, like working with the public, enjoy driving, are able to work long hours, this could be one of the most fun and rewarding jobs you’ve ever had!Select Ride Inc. offers a cab driver the opportunity to lease a commercial vehicle-for-hire in order to generate an income.
Yellow Cab Drivers are not Select Ride, Inc. employees, thus not eligible to receive health benefits, etc., through the company. Insurance options are available; such information, (brochures, etc.), are made available from an outside, independent agent.PREPARATIONS FOR TRAINING -- PREREQUISITES PRIOR TO DRIVING FOR YELLOW CAB:*
You first must obtain an Ann Arbor Cab Driver’s license through the City Police Department. This requires you to have and submit copies of the following four (4) items:
1) A valid State of Michigan chauffeur’s license (obtained from the Secretary Of State for $35.00)
2) A copy of your Motorized Vehicle Record (obtained from a S.O.S.-PLUS office ONLY). Currently the two closest such S.O.S. offices in this area are Belleville and Canton. The fee for this walk-in service is $8.00. (By mail, 6-8 weeks, the fee is $7.00). We will need a copy of this for our records before you begin training as well.
3) A copy of your Criminal History Record (from the State Police website) for $10.00. We can help you obtain this here in our office. We will also need a copy of this from you for OUR records.
4) Passport-quality photos (2) to submit with your City cab driver license application. Photos can cost $8 - $15 on average. Once approved, the City license fee is $15.00.
*Applicants are cautioned not to progress with the licensing steps until they have been offered a position with Yellow Cab. We receive many applications weekly and only selected candidates are invited back for an individual or group interview.
Note: Applicants will be required to submit to a D.O.T. drug and alcohol screening.
